We are a 5 partner practice (3 men and 2 women) with
9500 patients. Our main surgery site is a purpose
built surgery in Blackhall which was extended in
2006 to provide 10 consulting rooms, 5 nurse
consulting/treatment rooms and a minor op suite. On
site we also have a physiotherapy suite, chiropody
room, the offices of the health visitors and
district nurses and a large community room as well
as plenty of administration space. Our Peterlee site
is attached to the Peterlee Community Hospital and
consists of 5 consulting rooms and administration
space.
Blackhall is a former mining village and the
practice area covers the other mining villages of
Horden and Easington, as well as the town of
Peterlee and surrounding villages.
The special interests of the partners include
dermatology, palliative care, addiction problems,
women’s and child health. We were a new training
practice in 2006, however, the practice has a long
history of training Emergency Care Practitioners,
Nurse Practitioners, Community Matrons and Nurse
Prescribers. The partners and our fantastic Business
Manager are actively involved in the PCT and the
practice is at the forefront of innovation in
practice in the Easington area. We have a large
nurse team including 2 nurse practitioners and offer
a wide range of nurse led chronic disease management
and specialist clinics.
In July 2008 we won the
contract to run an APMS practice at Jupiter House in
Horden. This practice has 2400 patients and is
staffed by salaried GPs and a full Primary Health
Care Team. Subject to Deanery approval, Jupiter
House should also become a training practice from
August 2009 with Dr Anne Holmes as the very
experienced trainer there. The practices work very
closely together and we hope that having a GPStR in
both practices simultaneously will be very
beneficial for both the registrars and practices.
The required out of hours sessions for the GP
Registrar will be done via Primecare Sunderland,
based in Sunderland or Peterlee (covering the
Easington area).
We are a sociable and friendly practice who make a
point of meeting for coffee together daily and enjoy
meals out together whenever possible. We are still
excited about the new adventure of being a training
practice!
