The practice was established in 1886 in the village suburb of Norton on the northern edge of Stockton on Tees. Currently 5 full time partners, 2 job share partners and 4 part time partners work with 2 GP registrars. The fully integrated multi-disciplinary primary health care team moved into new purpose built premises in 2000.

We have 16,900 patients with a social class profile mirroring national statistics. Our area includes the northern edge of Stockton, Norton, Billingham, Wolviston and the Wynyard Estate. There is a commitment to making our service provide a personal, family style of care. Currently each full time partner doctor has a usual list of patients encouraging continuity and clear lines of responsibility.

The doctors work with a team which includes admin and reception staff, 5 practice nurses, 4 district nurses, 5 counsellors/gateway workers, a drug and alcohol worker, dietician and team of health care assistants (HCA). Nurse led clinics take place for diabetes, chronic kidney disease, contraception including fitting IUCD's and implanon, cervical cytology, childhood and travel immunisations, sexual health and chest clinic. The practice provides minor surgery and weight management clinics. The HCA team co-ordinates the bulk of chronic disease management for the practice patients.

There is an established programme of team meetings, management meetings and clinical meetings. The practice teaches first and fifth year undergraduates from Newcastle University.

Day to day consulting and record keeping has been fully computerised since 1994. We are paperlite using TPP’s system 1. There is extensive clerical support to ensure that the clinical IT system is available at all the times and holds current clinical data.

There is a library which is kept up to date, CD-ROM facilities are available, video equipment is available for teaching and a mobile phone is provided for on call. All rooms have internet access.

The surgery is open Monday to Friday 08:00 am to 06:00 pm routinely but participating in the extended hours scheme. We have not undertaken out of hours work since 2004. On-call during day time hours is currently on a 1 in 6 rota.

Doctors at Norton who are not currently trainers are Rodger Thornham, Richard Horne, Paddy O'Neill, Catherine Worth, Andrew Morton, Karen Dacombe, Joanne Hodgson, Laila Fazluddin and Rachel Litster.
