The practice is based in Coulby Newham to the south of Middlesbrough, and was created from scratch in 1982 as the area developed. In 1998 it merged with another single-handed practice to facilitate growth and the development of new premises which were completed in June 2001. The practice became PMS funded in April 2004. The practice list size is approaching 4200 and growing.

We are fully computerised and have been since 1990, though it is only in the last two years that we have been effectively paperless. Currently we have two partners, one part-time salaried doctor and a nurse practitioner, with as full a team as can be afforded in a small practice! The practice area is relatively compact, and could probably the best described as suburban in nature, with pockets of deprivation. The practice population has tended to be younger than the average for the area, but is ageing with the practice itself.

We exceeded our aspirations under the quality and outcomes framework last year, and achieved excellent results which we hope to better. Our incidence of chronic diseases is within the ranges expected for our practice size, and there is plenty of opportunity to contribute their management whilst not been overburdened.

Experience of unstructured care during the out of hours period will need to be gained through working sessions under supervision within the local out of hours provider’s service (currently PrimeCare). This will involve a minimum of 36 hours during the six months attachment, which will equate to one or two sessions each month. We advise that these are spread out through the six months, rather than rushed at the end. Some of them may be undertaken with the trainer, but the overnight sessions will be supervised by Primecare.

Outside of teaching registrars, the practice has been involved with taking final year medical students (since 1995), nurse prescribers on their course, and is closely involved in the introduction of Spanish doctors into the local general practice scene. Other medical interests include involvement in "connecting for health" and the development of IT in general practice. Dr Beeby has section 12 approval under the mental health act 1983, and regularly conducts assessments outside of the practice.
