The Garth Surgery is a long established group practice in the small market town of Guisborough. The list size is 10,650.

Although the practice covers three small villages near Guisborough, most of the practice is very compact with 90% of patients living within two miles of the surgery.

There are seven doctors including one salaried partner working from modern, purpose built premises. Dr Williams has a special interest in cognitive therapy and Dr Smith is the lead GP for teaching medical students. The practice team includes three practice nurses, two nurse practitioners, two nursing assistants and three counsellors as well as the normal attached staff. The whole practice spends one afternoon each week dedicated to training and communication. This has proved highly effective in planning and implementing developments within the practice.

The practice is committed to providing whole person care and treating patients in the community as much as possible. To this end we are helped by having access to Guisborough General Hospital, part of which is a GP hospital where we have general medical beds and are also involved in providing cover for a minor casualty unit.

Guisborough Maternity Hospital has recently reopened following a temporary closure. This Midwife led unit enables provides safe obstetric care in a relatively homely environment, which is highly popular with the local community. The practice provides medical cover to the unit but we no longer are involved in active obstetric interventions.

Responsibility for Out of hours care for the practice has been taken over by Langbaurgh PCT utilising Primecare. Registrars are expected to take a full share in emergency care during normal working hours and arrangements are now in place to provide supervised Out of Hours experience via the Primecare service.
