We are a large but friendly practice consulting from
a purpose built surgery in Ferryhill and a smaller
Health Centre in Chilton. The Practice has a list
size of 16000 patients, 10000 of whom live in
Ferryhill, 4500 in Chilton and the remainder in
outlying villages and farms.
Ferryhill and Chilton are both ex mining towns
although the mines closed many years ago. There is
little employment within the area and most patients
work in light industry in the adjoining towns of
Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe.
The partnership consists of ten doctors, six of whom
are full time and four part time. Three of the
partners are female and seven male.
In addition to the doctors, the primary health care
team includes 4 practice nurses, 2 health care
assistants and a full complement of secretarial and
support staff. A psychologist and physiotherapist
consult from the surgery with 4 district nurses,
CPN’s and Health visitors based locally.
Although we have only recently become a training
practice (Aug 2001), we have been involved in
teaching medical students since 1997.
The partners have a wide range of interests, which
include minor surgery, clinical assistant sessions
in dermatology and open access endoscopy. One
partner provides in house sigmoidoscopies and is
also taking referrals for vasectomies from other
local practices. We have in house diabetic clinics
and a local paediatrician provides regular
outpatient clinics from our premises.
The practice is fully computerised having become
‘paperless’ in 2000. All consulting rooms have
desktop PC’s with access to the NHS net and wider
