Thornaby & Barwick Medical Group is a large practice
serving the needs of Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick,
and the small village of Maltby with a total
practice population of over 19,000 patients.
There are nine partners and two salaried GP’s in the
practice which operate from two state of the art
purpose-built surgeries, with all the bells and
whistles. We are looking to expand further in the
future. We currently provide all of the usual
services, complemented in this task by a nursing
team of three nurse practitioners and five practice
nurses. We have all the usual attached staff
including midwives, and counsellors to name but a
couple.
The practice is new to registrar teaching but has a
long history of medical student training, and
mentoring of nursing and attached staff seeking
further experience and qualifications. Such is the
impetus to train that Dr. Selvan has become a new
trainer immediately following on Dr Cook (who is
also GP tutor for North Tees). You will not be short of teaching
and support!
The partners’ medical interests are wide ranging and
together we form a complementary team with a very
wide skill and knowledge base. As a registrar you
would be expected to contribute to monthly team
educational meetings where a topic of choice is
identified for further study, and presented to the
whole clinical team, but this is not as frightening
as it sounds. We believe that this promotes personal
learning in depth, helps one to identify one’s own
learning needs and builds the team. Audit is also
expected and may be presented as part of the
educational package. Help and support is difficult
to avoid and we all have something to contribute.
You will be expected to consult from both surgeries
though not at the same time: this is a skill that
even the more experienced have not mastered. It will
give you experience of different environments,
problems and patients and may assist with your
choice of future practice. You will be expected to
take part in on-call within the practice on a 1 in 9
basis from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday, but will never
be left to cope alone. Of course you will still need
six sessions with Primecare in each six month period
to be “signed up”.
Socially we are a diverse bunch with a wide
perspective on life, and have hobbies including fine
food appreciation, mountain-biking, squash, horse
riding, photography, travel, gardening….and indeed
many others! We are even considering a day
white-water rafting to develop the team, which I
guess makes us adrenaline junkies!
Join us for the ultimate team experience!
