Loftus is a small town on the East Cleveland coast,
6 miles south of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The practice
also covers the smaller villages of Easington,
Liverton Mines, Carlin How and Skinningrove, with a
few patients further a field into North Yorkshire.
The National Park boundary cuts through the practice
area. The practice population is very stable with a
good mix of age and social class. Many people are
employed at the Boulby Potash mine and Corus in
Skinningrove, but we also have a substantial number
classed as deprived.
Our premises were purpose built in 1990 and are in
the centre of Loftus. There is a community hospital
3 miles away in Brotton where we have a minor
injuries unit, GP beds and physiotherapy and X-ray
facilities. Many consultants come out from
Middlesbrough for outpatient clinics there. One of
the partners works every Thursday evening for
Primecare adding up to 3 hours of patient contact
time and the Registrar is welcome to accompany him
and gain their OOH experience in this low stress
way.
There are currently 5 partners: Dr Martin Glasby, Dr
Rob Dallara, Drs Richard and Carolyn Rigby and Dr
Michael Speight. We are also involved in
undergraduate teaching and Dr. Richard Rigby is a
board member of the PCT and a GPwSI in diabetes. Dr
Dallara has a special interest in occupational
health. We employ 3 practice nurses and a
phlebotomist and have the usual full range of
attached staff. The treatment rooms are well
equipped with ECG, 2 defibrillators, spirometer and
cryotherapy etc. There are diabetes, asthma and COPD
clinics as well as child health surveillance.
The practice is fully computerised and paper-light.
We are a relatively long way from the District
General Hospital so pride ourselves on offering a
comprehensive service to our patients. Hence we
believe a training post in Loftus will offer an
excellent all-round experience to a GP registrar.
