Yarm Medical Centre serves approximately 12,650
patients in an attractive market town south of
Stockton. We cover the semi-urban areas of Yarm and
Eaglescliffe as well as a small number of rural
areas into North Yorkshire. The geographical
position of the practice allows us to utilise the
best services of North Tees, South Tees and
Northallerton Trusts.
We are a friendly partnership of 4 men and 3 women
plus a salaried GP. The 3 youngest partners have all
completed the Cleveland VTS. We operate a shared
list system but encourage patients to consult their
regular doctor where possible. Communication is a
strong theme in the practice and the doctors have
daily informal meetings over coffee as well as
regular team education and business meetings.
The practice has adopted an ‘Advanced Access’
approach to appointments and we are now able to see
all urgent cases the same day. All patients wanting
a routine appointment are seen within 48 hours. This
has been facilitated, due to excellent Nurse Triage
by our Nurse Practitioners, for all same day
appointment requests.
We work alongside a very full complement of practice
and attached staff. We are fortunate that our team
also includes 2 full time Nurse Practitioners,
Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, Counsellor,
Physiotherapist and Dietician. We offer the full
range of Health Promotion and Disease Management
Clinics including a weekly Dr and Nurse Well Woman
Clinic (this covers all areas of menstrual and
breast problems, HRT and contraception including a
high number of coil fittings).
We are a new training practice but have a strong
emphasis on education within the practice, with 6 of
the partners involved in undergraduate training. We
have been active participants in all stages of
undergraduate teaching for many years and we are
very enthusiastic to expand our skills as a team
into post graduate education and vocational
training. We are able to offer the registrar his or
her own fully equipped room and the practice is
almost ‘paper light’ as regards the use of the
computer.
The partners have an active involvement in a number
of outside areas including PCT executive member, PPD
tutor for first year students, Senior medical tutor
- facilitating 3rd year teaching in general
practice, Macmillan GP facilitator, PCT cancer care
lead and 2 partners completing intending trainers
course.
North Tees PCT provide out of hours care but will
actively support and work with the registrar to
ensure they feel they have adequate experience of
out of hours work.
